It’s Alive!

The adoption of an ecological approach to movement behavior and skill acquisition relates to a scientist’s or practitioner’s scope of analysis being centered on the athlete-environment relationship and its reciprocal nature. At the heart of this mutual relationship exist alive movement problems that are presented to the athlete to be solved based on the organization of integrated movement solutions (consisting of the interwoven processes of perception, cognition, and action). Using his ground-breaking paper from 2023 (co-written with Tyler Yearby and Keith Davids) to illustrate, Emergence team member Shawn Myszka discusses the important nature of these alive movement problems while highlighting how coaches and skill acquisition practitioners can ensure that the training activities in their practice environments are alive enough to positively transfer to competition.
